Petrobras hiring independent firm to examine accident

State oil company Petrobras will hire an independent firm to review an accident earlier this year at the Carioca Nordeste oil field, and will be installing a brand new riser system to substitute for the system which malfunctioned, company executives said Friday.

The Carioca Nordeste accident was "similar" to an earlier accident at the Guara field, Petrobras Exploration and Production Director Guilherme Estrella told reporters during a press conference.

Petrobras has its own team examining the accident, but also wants a second opinion, Estrella said.

The executive acknowledged the company is "facing a problem" which will require an engineering solution.

Production at the Carioca Nordeste long-term test has been halted since the accident, executives said.
