A nationwide public opinion poll, released over the weekend by the DataFolha organization, showed a record 68 percent of Brazilians in favor of impeaching President Dilma Rousseff. Only 27 percent oppose impeachment. A similar poll in February found 60 percent supporting impeachment and 33 percent opposing it. Impeachment motions are already before the Chamber of Deputies. A special committee in the Chamber is scheduled to begin deliberations on impeachment this week. Opposition parties have accused Rousseff of illegally manipulating the federal budget. More recently, accusations have surfaced of possible obstruction of justice in relation to a sweeping corruption investigation into the government. More broadly, Rousseff has lost support because of a sagging economy. Brazil has entered a second year of recession, while inflation remains over 10 percent.
