Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday named an experienced diplomat with expertise in North American affairs as his Foreign Minister. Career diplomat Ernesto Araújo will become Brazilian Foreign Minister on January 1. He is currently head of the Foreign Ministry’s Division of North American Affairs. He is a 29-year veteran of Brazil’s Foreign Service. In announcing the appointment, Bolsonaro called Araújo “a brilliant intellectual.” He said the appointment was part of “a process of renewal in foreign affairs.”
