The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday night elected Congressman Rodrigo Maia as its new Speaker. Maia is a member of the Democratic Party (DEM) and supports the administration of Acting President Michel Temer. Maia defeated PSD (Partido Social Democrático) Congressman Rogério Rosso in a run-off ballot, by a margin of 285 to 170. The run-off took place after eliminating 12 other candidates in a first round of voting. Rosso is part of a group supporting former Speaker Eduardo Cunha. Cunha resigned as Speaker earlier this month in the face of a sweeping investigation into alleged influence-peddling and money laundering. Maia has promised to streamline passage of administration-sponsored proposals such as a constitutional amendment to cap federal spending.
