In another victory for Brazilian President Michel Temer, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies on Thursday elected administration ally Rodrigo Maia as speaker for a two-year term. Maia served a brief term as interim speaker in 2016. Maia received 293 votes in the 513-member Chamber against five other candidates. On Wednesday, the Senate elected pro administration Senator Eunício Oliveira as its presiding officer, also for a two-year term. Both men have expressed favorable views regarding Temer’s legislative agenda, which includes major reforms in areas such social security, labor and taxes.
