A Rio de Janeiro judge has issued an arrest warrant for controversial Brazilian investor Eike Batista and eight others in connection with an investigation into state corruption. Batista’s lawyer said the business executive is in New York and will return to Brazil shortly. The lawyer said Batista intends to fully cooperate in the investigation. A court spokesman said Batista was likely to be incarcerated as soon as he arrives in the country. The arrests stem from a probe into alleged bribery and money laundering in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Former state governor Sérgio Cabral is already in prison facing charges developed under the investigation. Police allege that Batista paid bribes to state officials in order to obtain favors related to public works projects in Rio. Batista became a public figure a decade ago with a grand scheme for energy, mining and transportation development in various regions of Brazil. However, his empire, under the aegis of holding company EBX, crumbled when component companies failed to deliver profits.
