Brazilian Minister of Industry, Trade and Services Marcos Pereira resigned Wednesday, saying he will run for a legislative office in elections in October. Pereira is national chairman of the small PRB (Partido Republicano Brasileiro). President Michel Temer accepted the resignation and did not immediately name a replacement. Separately, the president announced appointment of Congresswoman Cristiane Brasil of the PTB (Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro) as minister of labor, replacing Ronaldo Nogueira, who resigned in December. Brasil is the daughter of PTB National Chairman Roberto Jefferson. More cabinet resignations are expected in the coming weeks. Under Brazil’s Constitution, holders of executive offices must resign by April in election years to be eligible as candidates for elective offices.
