The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday announced a $56 million campaign against the creeping Zika virus, the mosquitos which spread it and the diseases it can engender. According to press reports, Brazil is likely to receive a large portion of the funding. The virus initially spread throughout Brazil and has now reached nearly 30 countries, mainly in the Western Hemisphere. Although rarely fatal, it can cause permanent neurological damage. WHO Director Margaret Chan will visit Brazil, accompanied by a team of experts, onFebruary 23 to discuss Brazil’s role in the upcoming campaign.
