Brazil will not impose taxes on online streaming services such as Netflix or phone messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Communications Minister Gilberto Kassab told a communications industry conference Thursday night. “There is no need to tax these services,” he said. “We’re here to protect consumers from high costs.” Brazilian cable television companies and telephone service providers have complained that the lack of taxation for Netflix, WhatsApp and others is unfair. Kassab noted that some applications, such as WhatsApp, are free. “That’s good for consumers,” he said.
