The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies Ethics Committee voted Tuesday 11-9 to expel Chamber Speaker Eduardo Cunha, accused of graft and obstruction of justice. The issue now goes to the full Chamber of Deputies for a final decision. Cunha was suspended from his functions as Speaker in May by a Brazilian Supreme Court decision. A vote to expel him permanently from the Chamber would open Cunha to criminal prosecution. The committee vote was seen by Brazilian political risk analysts as a key test of Congress’s appetite for combating corruption.
