After weeks of controversial parliamentary maneuvers, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies Ethics Committee voted on Tuesday to launch a full-scale investigation into financial and other affairs of Chamber Speaker Eduardo Cunha. The committee voted 11-9 to launch the probe, which could result in removal of Cunha from his post as Speaker and, possibly, from his seat in the lower house of Congress. Cunha and his allies battled for weeks to avoid a vote, using various parliamentary maneuvers to postpone committee meetings on seven different occasions. He will now have ten days to present a defense against initial accusations including perjury, graft and money laundering.
