The Brazilian Senate on Wednesday elected Senator Eunício Oliveira as its presiding officer for a two-year term. Oliveira belongs to the same political party, the PMDB (Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro), as Brazilian President Michel Temer. Oliveira received 61 votes against only 10 for rival Senator José Medeiros. Another 10 senators abstained. The large victory margin for Oliveira should bode well for Temer’s legislative agenda, which includes major reforms in areas such social security, labor and taxes. The Chamber of Deputies will elect its presiding officer Thursday.
