Brazil’s Supreme Court removes Chamber Speaker from job

May 5, 2016 by

An injunction handed down Thursday by a Brazilian Supreme Court justice has removed controversial Chamber of Deputies Speaker Eduardo Cunha from office. Justice Teori Zavascki ordered Cunha to be removed as both Speaker and as a member of Congress. Zavascki cited what he called “ample evidence” of bribery, money laundering, obstruction of justice and other alleged crimes. Cunha can appeal the order to the full Supreme Court, which could issue a definitive ruling as early as next week. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Waldir Maranhão will serve as Acting Speaker. Maranhão is himself under investigation for many of the same crimes attributed to Cunha.
