Brazilian Senate to seat panel in Rousseff case April 26

April 19, 2016 by

The Brazilian Senate will seat a special 21-member committee on April 26 to consider possible removal from office of President Dilma Rousseff, Senate President Renan Calheiros said Tuesday. Calheiros said political party leaders will nominate committee members Friday. The full Senate will vote on the panel’s composition Monday and then seat the committee. Rousseff was impeached by the Chamber of Deputies on Sunday on accusations of manipulating the federal budget and interfering in affairs of state-owned financial institutions. The special committee will examine the case for 10 days and then make recommendations to the full Senate. The Senate will then vote on whether to shelve the case or hold a trial that could result in Rousseff’s removal from office.
