Brazilian truckers blocked highways in ten states Monday in a broad but largely unfocused protest against government transportation and fuels policies. Police said selected highways were blocked at times Monday but that interstate traffic was still flowing at close to normal levels. There were also some disruptions in urban areas such as São Paulo. The protest was organized by independent truck owners, with truckers organizations and unions largely sidelined. The independent truckers are demanding a nationwide minimum freight rate and government-ordered cuts in diesel fuel prices, among other demands. Some truckers are also seeking impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. Government leaders said Monday that the administration already met most of the demands following similar protests in April. No talks were scheduled between officials and strikers.
