Brazil’s Bolsonaro pushes for “some” pension reform in 2018

November 6, 2018 by

Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro told reporters Tuesday he will push for “at least some pension reform before the end of this year, even if it’s not everything we want.” He made the comments on his first full day in the capital of Brasília since being elected president on October 28. He takes office on January 1. Bolsonaro met with congressional leaders Tuesday and will meet with outgoing President Michel Temer Wednesday. He said he will push Temer at Wednesday’s meeting to get behind a joint effort to pass a limited pension reform in Brazil’s lame-duck Congress. Both Bolsonaro and Temer have said reforms are needed to control run-away deficits in Brazil’s public pension system. In further comments, Bolsonaro pledged to respect Brazil’s 1988 Constitution, calling it “the lodestar of our democracy.”
