Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on Monday named an Army general with broad international experience as his key institutional adviser. Retired Army General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz will serve as Bolsonaro’s Governmental Affairs Secretary, a post currently held by Congressman Carlos Marun. The secretary’s job is to manage negotiations with Congress and serve as a liaison between the President and social institutions such as labor unions, business groups and professional associations. Santos Cruz, 66, previously served in sensitive domestic and international roles. He was a presidential adviser under President Michel Temer and served briefly as Public Security Secretary in the Justice Ministry. From 2007 to 2009, Santos Cruz commanded United Nations forces in a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. He later served in a similar United Nations role in Congo.
