Beating a legal deadline by just minutes, Brazil’s Congress on Tuesday night approved legislation limiting the number of Cabinet ministries to 22. The legislation was strongly supported by President Jair Bolsonaro, who put the limitation in place earlier this year via a so-called Provisional Measure (MP). The MP was due to lapse Tuesday night unless passed by Congress. Previously, Brazil had 29 ministries. Bolsonaro said it was necessary to limit the number of ministries in order to cut costs and streamline decision-making.
