Brazil’s Supreme Court sidelines Senate President

December 6, 2016 by

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday night issued an injunction temporarily removing Senator Renan Calheiros from his duties as Senate President. Calheiros will continue as an active member of the Senate while he is under multiple investigations for corruption. The court ruled that he should be removed temporarily as Senate President due to the fact that, as such, he is now first in line to succeed to the Brazilian presidency should anything happen to the incumbent, President Michel Temer. Senator Jorge Viana of the PT (Partido dos Trabalhadores) will preside over the Senate through the end of the year. Calheiros was the object of street protests in major Brazilian cities on Sunday. Protesters called for his removal as part of a sweeping investigation into official corruption.
