China temporarily bans Brazilian meat imports

March 21, 2017 by

The Chinese government has temporarily banned Brazilian meat imports in the wake of an inspection scandal, the Brazilian government confirmed on Monday night. Last week, Brazilian Federal Police launched a major campaign against alleged bribery involving meat inspectors and meatpackers. Also Monday night, the Brazilian government announced suspension of meat exports from 21 facilities named in the original police probe. China said it will resume Brazilian imports once it receives assurances from the Brazilian government that meat inspections have been normalized. South Korea originally joined the ban on Brazilian meat imports but then rolled back its order.
