Brazilian federal prosecutors on Wednesday issued a formal indictment against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and seven others for their alleged involvement in a sweeping corruption scandal. The indictment alleges fraud, money laundering and influence-peddling. It focuses on a luxury apartment used by the former chief executive in the beach-side resort of Guarujá. Prosecutors allege that Lula was the effective owner of the apartment which he received from contractors in exchange for his influence with the federal government. Lula has denied the allegations, saying he used the property infrequently and only as a guest of the owners of record.
