Brazil’s Social Democratic Party (PSDB), a key supporter of President Michel Temer, will remain in the president’s congressional coalition, at least for the time being, the party’s national chairman said Monday night. Following a six-hour meeting of the party’s National Committee, Chairman Tasso Jereissati said the PSDB will remain part of the coalition. “Not to do so would bring harm to the administration’s reform agenda,” Jereissati said. However, he added, “Party leaders will make a daily evaluation of circumstances. Lately, there have been new facts to report on virtually a daily basis.” Last week, Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court voted 4-3 to reject a motion that would have removed Temer from office for alleged campaign finance violations in 2014. However , Temer still faces possible indictment on separate charges of bribery and influence-peddling. The allegations come amid a campaign by the president to pass modernizing economic reforms in areas such as pensions, taxation and labor laws.
