Retired labor judge Caio Vieira de Mello was sworn in as Brazil’s new Labor Minister on Tuesday, with a mission to clean up the graft-ridden department. He replaces Helton Yomura, who resigned in disgrace last week after being accused of selling union authorizations. The accusation, by prosecutors, included other members of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB). Vieira de Mello is a carrier judge and not a member of any political party. He pledged to root out corruption in the Ministry.
