Poll: majority of Brazilians see losses from Olympics

July 27, 2016 by

A majority of Brazilians believe the Rio de Janeiro Olympic games will bring more costs than benefits, according to a poll published Wednesday. Some 60% of Brazilians say costs of the games will outweigh any benefits, while only 32% see net benefits, according to a nationwide poll taken by the Public Opinion Research Institute (Ibope). Brazilian government agencies spent an estimated R$40 billion on the Rio de Janeiro games. The Olympic games begin August 5. Athletes representing a number of countries have already complained about inadequate accommodations, incomplete venues and polluted waters.
