Two key Brazilian Cabinet members resign

April 20, 2016 by

Two key Cabinet members resigned Wednesday, leaving nine of Brazil’s 32 Cabinet-level posts vacant. Energy Minister Eduardo Braga and Ports Minister Helder Barbalho quit, citing political conflicts. Both are members of the PMDB (Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro). A majority of PMDB members of Congress voted last Sunday to impeach Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The President is accused of abusing her budgetary authority. Nine of Brazil’s 32 Cabinet ministries are currently being managed by Acting Ministers. Rousseff is unlikely to appoint replacements for the key jobs before a second impeachment vote, this time in the Brazilian Senate, in May.
