U.S. President Barack Obama has named a senior diplomat with experience in Latin America and South Asia as the new American Ambassador to Brazil. Obama named Peter Michael McKinley to the post in Brasília to replace the departing Liliana Ayalde. McKinley spent part of his childhood in Brazil and Mexico and speaks both Spanish and Portuguese. He is a career foreign service officer, an historian and author. McKinley previously served as American ambassador to three other countries—Peru, Colombia and, most recently, Afghanistan.
