The U.S. Agricultre Department on Thursday suspended all imports of Brazilian fresh beef until further notice, citing what it called “recurrent problems” with product safety. In a statement, the Department said the ban would remain in place until the Brazilian government takes “adequate measures” to allay safety concerns. The Department said it rejected 11% of Brazilian fresh beef imports from March through June because of product safety issues, calling that figure “far above normal levels.” Brazilian authorities responded by saying they will evaluate how to deal with U.S. safety concerns.
