• Court Rules Lula Ineligible. The Supreme Electoral Court on Friday night ruled 6-1 that former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is ineligible to run for President again this year due to his conviction on corruption charges. The former President vowed to appeal the ruling to the Brazilian Supreme Court. (see more)

• All 13 Presidential Campaigns Kick-off Radio/TV Ads. All 13 political parties fielding presidential hopefuls this year kicked-off free television and radio advertising over the weekend. The Workers’ Party (PT) used its time to criticize the Supreme Electoral Court for ruling its candidate, former President Lula, ineligible. (see more)

• Candidates raised R$110 million through August. Data released by the Supreme Electoral Court showed that Brazil’s 13 presidential candidates raised only R$110 million for their campaigns through August 31, far below previous elections. Fund raising was led by Social Democrat Geraldo Alckmin, who accounted for 41% of the total. Corporate donations have been banned in this year’s election. (see more)
