• Women increase presence in lower house of Congress by 15%. Women increased their presence in the Chamber of Deputies in last week’s election by 15%. There will be 77 women among the 513 members when the new lower house convenes in February. The figure still falls short of the legally set goal of 30%. (see more)

• Haddad “confident” Lula will be found innocent on appeal. Leftist presidential candidate Fernando Haddad dodged the question of an eventual pardon for imprisoned former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by saying he is confident Lula will be found innocent of corruption charges on appeal. Lula is serving a 12-year prison term for corruption. (see more)

• Former President Cardoso says “dialog” open with Haddad, not Bolsonaro. Former centrist President Fernando Henrique Cardoso said in an interview that “avenues for dialog exist” between him and leftist presidential candidate Fernando Haddad. He said no such avenues exist in the case of hard-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro. Cardoso, however, was careful to say his comments do not constitute an endorsement of Haddad. (see more)
