• Bolsonaro forced to roll back son’s damaging remarks on Supreme Court. Hard-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro was forced to distance himself from remarks made over the weekend by his son, Congressman-elect Eduardo Bolsonaro. The younger Bolsonaro said, “All it takes is a private and a corporal in a jeep to close down the Supreme Court.” The elder Bolsonaro responded by saying, “There would be no danger, under my administration, of closing down the Supreme Court.” (see more)

• Bolsonaro proposes independent Central Bank, end of re-election. In a series of weekend interviews, hard-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro said he will propose legislation making the Central Bank independent of the Finance Ministry. He said he will also propose “a profound political reform,” including an end to the immediate re-election of executive officers, including the President. (see more)

• Haddad program would revoke spending ceiling, dump labor reform. Leftist presidential candidate Fernando Haddad filed a new government program with electoral authorities over the weekend. The program calls for repeal of a constitutionally set ceiling on government spending. It would also revoke labor reforms, adopted in 2017, designed to modernize Brazil’s job market. (see more)
