The Council played a key role in supporting the launch and development of the Brazil Caucus in the U.S. Congress. The Caucus was established in 1999 during the 3rd World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Seattle to foster understanding and enhance the U.S. relationship with Brazil, protect and maintain the free market system, and identify ways to increase the flow of trade and investment between both countries.
The Caucus is a bipartisan congressional member organization focused on strengthening U.S.-Brazil relations, traditionally co-chaired by two to four of its members. The Caucus’ goal is to facilitate bilateral collaboration on a number of issues of common interest between the two countries, including trade, regional security, counterterrorism, energy, and the environment. Caucus members expect to explore additional areas of collaboration through briefings and discussions with leading Brazilian and American diplomats, scholars, and stakeholders.
The Council also works closely with committees of jurisdiction in Congress, including the House Foreign Affairs, and Senate Foreign Relations committees (with particular focus on Western Hemisphere subcommittee members); the House Ways and Means Committee; the Senate Finance Committee; and House and Senate leadership offices. Moreover, the Council coordinates with the U.S. Embassy and Amcham Brasil to facilitate congressional delegation visits to Brazil so that it can provide briefings, materials, and messaging for those congressional offices.
