Cooperative Agreement Will Reach Green Companies Nationwide in an Effort to Increase U.S. Exports to Brazil

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s TradeRootsand Brazil-U.S. Business Council, along with the  National Chamber Foundation, today announced the launch of a two-year cooperator agreement with the Department of Commerce to promote green technology exports to Brazil.  The initiative, named “Export Green: Growing Exports to Brazil,”will organize events, trade missions, and educational campaigns to inform and mobilize business and opinion leaders in the U.S. and Brazil regarding green technologies, international standard protocols, and intellectual property protection.

“This project underscores the importance of strong economic, political, and social ties between the United States and Brazil,” said Steven Bipes, executive director at the Brazil-U.S. Business Council.  “Continuing to grow bilateral economic and trade ties, while promoting economic growth that is sustainable and environmentally sound will benefit both countries.”

Export Green is a project launched with the Department of Commerce’s Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP).  MDCP awards include financial and technical assistance from the International Trade Administration (ITA) to support projects that enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. industries. An MDCP award establishes a partnership between ITA and non-profit industry groups such as trade associations and chambers of commerce.

Six events to be organized nationwide will bring together business, government, opinion, and education leaders to highlight market opportunities and challenges in Brazil. These forums will allow companies to gain the necessary expertise to expand their exports by taking advantage of local resources.  Additionally, Export Green will host two inbound and two outbound trade missions to successfully pair companies with customers in Brazil.  The Chamber will use these forums and missions to highlight and discuss the critical need for increased international engagement, the unrealized potential for exports, and the need for environmentally sustainable growth.

“In order for U.S. companies to continue to grow, we must look to markets overseas, where 96% of the world’s consumers live,” said Bipes.  “Successful U.S. companies are embracing developing markets, and as Brazil is the fastest growing economy in the Western Hemisphere, opportunities are plentiful for U.S. companies looking to expand and grow jobs through trade.  Green technologies promise improved living standards, resource conservation, and high-paying American jobs.  We need to get the American business community energized about the potential in this market and the benefits of green trade.”
